Weekly Photo Challenge: Contrast

Balinese traditions meet fashionista life

WordPress has a weekly (allegedly it is weekly, though this was clearly posted last week and there isn’t a new challenge up yet) photo challenge that l have decided to try and participate in just for something fun. The most recent challenge was to post a photo that portrays the concept of “contrast”.

This is a photo of Balinese women praying at the hindu temple of Pura Luhur Poten in East Java. The temple sits in the shadow of Mt. Bromo, an active volcano in Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park.

I chose it for contrast based on the content rather than on light versus dark. Here old traditions, as seen in the beautiful Balinese lace costumes and new fads, as seen in the zebra print handbag, sit in stark contrast to one another. I think it makes for an interesting combination of old and new and reveals just one situation when the two seem to be swimming gracefully together rather than crashing violently into one another, as so often happens.

(Photo taken in December 2011 during my travels through Java and Bali.)
